In 2002 (or so) Judy Leister wanted to enter her mini, Peabody, in the Parade of Champions, but didn’t think his trim was a “regulation” haircut, as he sported a mustache at the time. A friend reminded Judy that many undergoing chemotherapy lose their hair, so Judy decided that Peabody would lose his mustache if, and only if, friends would pay to see him in a traditional poodle trim. That year the funds went to the American Cancer Society. In 2003 she started the Performance Fundraiser (then a silent auction) and Peabody’s Haircut money went to the PCA Foundation instead. As she said, “Peabody is very healthy and sound and we felt so blessed to have such a wonderful little guy so doing this project was our small way of putting something back into the breed.”
Peabody’s Haircut has raised as much as $3,000 in a single year, just from his friends and adoring fans. Folks make checks payable to the PCA Foundation, and mail them to Judy. She turns the checks over to the Foundation at PCA. In 2010 she made a poster with a picture of Peabody in the center, the names of the donors to the fund, and pictures of their poodles if they submitted, or the names of their poodles. The pictures were surrounded by cut-out stars. The poster was lovely, and a wonderful way to recognize the donors and the reasons why folks donated to Peabody’s Haircut.
The PCA Foundation, a non-profit organization incorporated in Long Lake, Minnesota, currently funds studies on Sebaceous Adenitis, Epilepsy, Polymicrogyria, Atrial Septal Defect, and Leggs-Calves-Perthes disease and Patella luxation. In the past, research supported by the Foundation has resulted in the Optigen tests for PRA/PRCD in miniatures. The Foundation continues its support of cancer research, including lymphoma. Through the Foundation, CERF and DNA testing will be available at the national specialty in April, 2012.
Please consider a donation to Peabody’s Haircut because you have a healthy poodle, or because you’d like to make sure that poodle babies have a better start in life! Contributions go to:

If you take your dog to a groomer, donate 10% of your grooming costs for a year. If you support the AKC as a breeder, handler, or exhibitor in obedience, tracking, field, agility, or rally, think about donating a percentage of the entry fees for a year. Next time you write a check for an entry fee, write a check to the PCA Foundation at the same time. Your dog’s picture can be on Judy’s poster at PCA, for all to admire and enjoy. If your dog goes to the vet for a checkup, and your dog is healthy, think about writing a check to the PCA Foundation as a thank you. Let’s see if we can double last year’s support, and hit $6,000 in 2012!
